How To Measure and Calculate Packaging Box Dimensions Accurately?

7,590 views Published by January 19, 2021

Finding the right packaging for your goods is very important for your business. But when customizing packaging boxes, choosing the right size often leaves non-professionals with no choice. How to measure the size of the box correctly? As a professional carton manufacturer, in this post, Kali will show you how to calculate the measurements of the box so you can know if it is right for your product.

Accurately calculating the measurements of a custom box is important for the product to have the right packaging and protection. In addition, depending on the measurements the price of the box can vary substantially. So, what’s the best way to measure a box dimension?

Paper Box Dimension Types

To accurately measure the size of the box, you first need to understand how the dimensions of the box are dimensioned.

Outer Dimensions of Paper Box
The maximum external space size formed after the paper tray is molded, reflecting the size of the space volume that is easy to take up. For example, the outer dimensions of the carton of the right-angle hexagonal body may be X0 or L0B0XH0. The outer dimensions are the basis for the design of outer packaging, shipping packaging and storage, stacking yards, and shelves.

Inner Dimensions of Paper Box
The size of the inner space formed after the paper tray is molded, the right angle hexagonal box and the size of the carton can be expressed as X1 or L1B1H1. Size is generally determined by the quantity, shape, size, or form of packaging, and is an important basis for the structural design of paper containers. In the box design process, the manufacturing size should be determined according to the calculation of the internal dimensions of the carton, in order to ensure that the container produced according to the manufacturing size can meet the design size of the product packaging, that is, the volume requirements.

Manufacturing (Graphic Design) Dimensions of Paper Box
The processing and manufacturing dimensions of the paper trays, labeled on the structural design unfold, can be represented by X. Right-angle hexagonal carton, the size of the carton is indicated by L-W-D.

How Do To Measure Box Dimensions?

Three Main Measurements

Regardless of the format of the box chosen, the dimensions of a carton always consist of the three dimensions length, width and height. The dimensions are also given in this order, i.e. length 450 mm x width 350 mm x height 150 mm. The three dimensions are determined as follows:

  • Measure Length (L): The long side of the open box
  • Width (B): The short side of the open box
  • Height (H): The inner edge from the box opening to the floor

How Are Boxes Measured?

To measure a box, you need to use a ruler or tape to measure the length, width, and height of the box. The listed dimensions are always interior dimensions.

  • The first dimension is the long one. It’s always the longest side that has a flap.
  • The next dimension is the width. The side of the width also has a flap, but it is always the shorter side than the length.
  • Measure the height of the package. Height is the only dimension that has no overlap. Measure the vertical side of the box from top to bottom. Height measurement does not include flaps.
The inner or outer dimension of the box?

Unless otherwise described, dimensions for cartons are generally given as an internal dimension (useful size) in the unit mm. If, for certain reasons, an exact external dimension is required, i.e. for a pallet carton, this shall be specified in the case of the request.

  • Note the following:
The outer dimensions of your packaged goods are, so to speak, the minimum internal dimensions for the box
  • Consider a production-related tolerance of approx. 5 mm
  • When using filling material, you should add approx. 50-100 mm on all sides
Two-piece boxes

In the case of two-piece cartons (e.B. lid boxes), the height of the lid is given as the fourth dimension after a slash, i.e. length 450 x width 350 x height 150 / lid height 100 mm.

We also want to tell you that, in the event of not finding your box with the measurements you need, we offer the possibility of manufacturing them. You will only have to send us our requirements so that we can know the size you want and how many units to manufacture, among others.
